Attack on polio team in Bajaur kills two including cop

At least two people, including a police personnel, were killed after unidentified gunmen opened fire on a polio vaccination team in Bajaur district on Tuesday. According to District Police Officer (DPO) Waqas Rafiq, the incident occurred in the Tangi area of Salarzai tehsil, where assailants targeted a polio team during duty. He said a police official deployed for the team’s security and a passerby sustained critical injuries in the firing and later succumbed to their wounds while being shifted to the hospital. New polio vaccination campaign in Gaza aims to reach 600,000 children

A large-scale polio vaccination campaign was launched in Gaza on Saturday aiming to immunise approximately 600,000 Palestinian children under the age of 10. The campaign is being conducted in collaboration with the Gaza Health Ministry, the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), and the United Nations Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA). In a statement, UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini said "another large scale vaccination campaign against polio started today (Saturday)". Read More…

Polio vaccinations ‘not enough’ for malnourished children: Save the Children

The global charity for children has released a statement saying more than 590,000 kids are to receive polio vaccinations in Gaza, where “tens of thousands of children have missed routine immunizations” during 16 months of the Israeli war. Ahmad Alhendawi, Middle East regional director of Save the Children, said although this vaccination campaign is “a crucial step”, it is still “not enough” because thousands of children have missed out on essential vaccines, are malnourished and are living in dire conditions. More on polio vaccinations planned in Gaza

No additional polio cases have been reported in Gaza since a 10-month-old baby was paralysed in August last year, but the new environmental samples collected from Deir el-Balah and Khan Younis have confirmed poliovirus transmission, according to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). The strain detected is genetically linked to the poliovirus found in Gaza in July last year, so a new vaccination campaign is scheduled from February 22-26, UNICEF said. Read More…

Polio vaccinations extended in Gaza city

Health authorities have extended polio vaccinations in Gaza city for an additional day, the Gaza Health Ministry said on Tuesday. Vaccinations will be administered at four centres: the Sheikh Radwan centre, Al Shatea'a centre, Muscat Al Rahma and Al Daraj centre, Health Minister Majed Abu Ramadan was quoted by the official Wafa news agency as saying.
