Israel says it has detained several people in Syrian territory during raids on weapons storage sites this week. Troops from the Israeli army’s 210th Division “apprehended several suspects involved in terrorist activity” this week and took them into Israeli territory, the military said. It said soldiers were deployed in southern Syria “with the goal of removing threats to the residents of the state of Israel”, especially the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. Israel has quietly held talks with the new regime in Syria in the hope of calming tensions, while the US is pushing for a broader diplomatic reconciliation. But the Israeli military also shelled targets in Syria this month after blaming it for rocket fire launched towards Israel.
