Kyiv/Kharkiv: On March 2, Ukrainians said they were fighting on in the first sizeable city Russia claimed to have seized. On the other hand, Moscow stepped up its deadly bombardment of major population centres that its invasion force has so far failed to tame. The most intensive bombardment struck Kharkiv, a city of 1.5 million people in the east, whose centre had been turned into a bombed-out wasteland of ruined facilities and trash.
