Over 1 billion people face acute poverty worldwide: UN

More than one billion people are living in acute poverty across the globe, a United Nations Development Program report said, with children accounting for over half of those affected. The paper published with the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) on Thursday highlighted that poverty rates were three times higher in countries at war, as 2023 saw the most conflicts around the world since the Second World War. US calls for more IMF, World Bank reforms for climate fight

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said that she backed efforts to boost the lending firepower of the IMF and World Bank to combat poverty and climate change. Speaking on the sidelines of the IMF-World Bank annual meetings in Morocco, Ms Yellen said the global lending system had already changed over time to face new challenges. “It has become common sense that addressing climate change and other global challenges is key to achieving development,” she added. Govt increases BISP allocation to one fold

Federal Minister for Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety and Chairperson Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) Ms Shazia Marri was informed that during the last year, the government has increased the budgetary allocation of Benazir Income Support Programme from Rs 250 billion to Rs 400 billion which is 60% increase in this budget. After escaping war, Palestinian family dies in Türkiye earthquakes

Twelve years ago, Abdel-Karim Abu Jalhoum fled war and poverty in the besieged Palestinian territory of Gaza for safety in Türkiye. On Monday, the massive earthquake that devastated parts of Türkiye and Syria killed him and his entire family. Abu Jalhoum, his wife Fatima, and their four children, who escaped the war in Gaza, are among 70 Palestinians who were killed in powerful quakes in southern Türkiye, Palestinian officials say. Pakistan urges world to step up against climate change

Madrid: Shazia Marri, minister for poverty alleviation and social safety and chairperson of Benazir Income Support Program (BISP), on Sunday urged the world to take some serious steps for resolving climate change issues. Addressing the 26th Socialist International Congress in Spain's Madrid, the minister said that 33 million people in Pakistan had been impacted by the devastating floods this year. 'Poverty eradication by 2030 unlikely to be met': World Bank

Washington: On October 5, the World Bank said in a new report that after the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine, the world was unlikely to meet a longstanding goal of ending extreme poverty by 2030. World Bank President David Malpass said: "the new Poverty and Shared Prosperity report showed the grim outlook facing tens of millions of people, and called for major policy changes to boost growth and help jumpstart efforts to eradicate poverty." Inflation, not poverty, is a real concern: Shaukat Tarin

Shaukat Tarin, the Prime Minister's Adviser on Finance and Revenue, minimised the prevalence of poverty in Pakistan on Friday, arguing that the rate has lately decreased. Mr Tarin told journalists at the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) that the World Bank's latest numbers show the poverty rate has reduced to 4.2 percent from 5.4 percent a year earlier.
