EV Policy May Shape Pakistan’s Auto Industry

Pakistan’s draft New Energy Vehicle policy aims to promote cleaner transport, reduce oil imports and develop an export-oriented auto sector. However, treating plug-in hybrids and battery electric vehicles equally could weaken those goals. Critics argue stronger incentives should favour BEVs, while hybrids compete based on emissions and fuel savings, encouraging genuine electrification, charging infrastructure and technology transfer. Pakistan's largest refiner Cnergyico is buying more US crude as Islamabad seeks to ‌diversify the country's energy supplies after disruption caused by the Iran war exposed its dependence on Gulf routes. Pakistan also wants to increase imports from the US to help narrow its trade surplus and secure reductions in trade tariffs imposed by President Trump. Cnergyico, which first bought US crude last year, is also considering spot purchases against longer-term contracts with Vitol and other suppliers based on "pricing, reliability and supply security", Vice Chairman Usama Qureshi told Reuters. Trump imposes forced labour tariffs, drawing protests from trading partners

The United States on Friday imposed new tariffs of 10% and 12.5% on goods from 60 trading partners, including the EU and China, alleging those countries failed to curb imports made by forced labour, just as a temporary 10% global tariff expired. The move is the White House's first step in efforts to rebuild President Donald Trump's near-global tariff wall after the US Supreme Court in February struck down his "reciprocal" duties of 10% to 50% imposed last year under a national emergencies law to try to shrink the US… Read More…

Belgium slams EU response to Israeli settlement imports

Belgium criticised the EU’s response to imports from illegal Israeli settlements as insufficient with Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot describing the bloc’s latest proposals as a “token gesture” rather than a genuine effort to act. Prevot said Belgium has been calling for months for concrete measures over the humanitarian situation in Gaza and the broader Israeli-Palestinian conflict. “The European Commission has finally proposed a few options in a two-page document. So it gives more the impression of being a token gesture than a genuine willingness to move forward,” Prevot told reporters. Read More…

Trump administration considers naval blockade to halt Cuban oil imports

The Trump administration is considering a total naval blockade on oil imports to Cuba, potentially to topple the Caribbean nation’s government, according to a Politico report citing people familiar with the plan. While no decision has been made, such a move has been sought by some critics of the Cuban government within the administration and reportedly backed by Marco Rubio. U.S. says India Profits from Russian Oil Trade Amid Ukraine Conflict

The United States has accused India of capitalizing on discounted Russian oil imports during the ongoing Ukraine war, labeling the practice as arbitrage. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent criticized India for purchasing cheap Russian crude, refining it, and reselling it globally, allegedly generating significant profits. According to a CNBC report, Bessent stated on “Squawk Box” that India’s actions amount to profiteering, with some of the country’s wealthiest families earning an estimated $16 billion in excess profits. India has become Russia’s top oil buyer since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, importing 1.5… Read More…
