Bangladesh has been roiled by unrest since mass youth-led protests broke out in July last year. What began as opposition to a government job-quota system transformed into a full-blown uprising after authorities used force to suppress protesters, killing up to 1,400 people and injuring thousands, according to a UN report. As protests grew, Bangladesh’s longtime leader Sheikh Hasina, viewed by critics as an “authoritarian” who violently suppressed dissent, fled to India. Last month, she was convicted of crimes against humanity, including for orchestrating mass killings of protesters, and sentenced to death by a special tribunal in Dhaka.
