On Jan 17, Ukraine’s former president Petro Poroshenko returned to Kyiv to handle treason charges in a criminal case. Poroshenko traveled from Warsaw and arrived at Zhuliany Airport in the Ukrainian capital on Monday and was welcomed by thousands of cheering supporters. He claims that the allegations were fabricated by the allies of his successor, Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
His return sets up a face-off with Zelenskyy’s government in what observers say is an ill-judged distraction at a time when Ukraine was under Russian pressure.
