Security policy and defence analyst Wolfgang Pusztai has told Al Jazeera that the appointment of Mohsen Rezaee, the former commander-in-chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), as Iran’s new security chief, certainly signifies that the influence of the hardliners is increasing in Tehran. “It signifies coordination between the Revolutionary Guard, the religious leaders of the state and the president of the state is even closer,” he said.
