Witnesses say suicide bombers targeted a Shia mosque in Kandahar, Afghanistan, during Friday prayers, killing at least 41 people and injured dozens more.

The attack happened just a week after the extremist Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for a suicide attack on Shia worshippers at a mosque in the northern city of Kunduz.

The bombing in Kandahar, the Taliban’s spiritual heartland, elicited no quick claim of responsibility.
