US President Donald Trump on Wednesday defended Israel’s renewed air strikes on Gaza, saying it “should hit back” if Israeli troops were killed, but he added that nothing would jeopardise the ceasefire. He spoke as the Israeli military confirmed that a soldier had been killed in the enclave’s south. Israel accused Hamas of violating the truce and on Tuesday retaliated with air strikes that killed at least 38 people, according to Gaza’s civil defence agency. Hamas denied any involvement in the death of the soldier, saying its fighters had “no connection to the shooting incident in Rafah”.
