It emerged on Friday that the United States had agreed to set up an interests section in Afghanistan supported by Qatar. The section would assist US citizens observing the shuttering of the embassy during the Taliban usurpation. US State Secretary Antony Blinken signed an agreement with his Qatari counterpart nominating Qatar as the United States’ ‘protecting power in Afghanistan’. According to Blinken, Qatar would establish a US interests section within its embassy in Kabul to provide basic services to American citizens in Afghanistan.
