More than 660,000 children are currently out of school in Gaza, and of its estimated 815 schools, 97 percent have been damaged or destroyed, Farida Shaheed says. The UN special rapporteur on the right to education described the collapse of Gaza’s education system due to Israel’s war as a “scholasticide”, which is the intentional destruction of educational infrastructure or the targeting of teachers and academics.
