The United Nations General Assembly voted overwhelmingly in favour of extending the term of UN Human Rights chief Volker Turk for four more years in spite of opposition from Russia, Israel and the United States. Of the 193-member UN General Assembly, 144 voted in favour, 10 against, and there were 13 abstentions in the vote on Friday. Earlier, a large majority of the chamber voted against a Russian counter-proposal to extend Turk’s term by just over two months, to the end of 2026.
