Scott Uehlinger, a former senior CIA officer, says the Trump-Xi meeting fell short of expectations but still produced a few key breakthroughs. Speaking to Al Jazeera, he said China’s reported commitment to increase purchases of US oil from Alaska – reducing reliance on Iranian exports – and its pledge not to provide military equipment to Tehran represent modest but important gains for Washington.

Trump told Fox News’ Sean Hannity this week that Xi pledged he would not supply military hardware, adding: “That’s a big statement.”
