On Sunday, a strong explosion of unknown origin shook the busy shopping street of Istiklal in Istanbul. It left six people dead and wounded dozens more, officials said. Police cordoned off the area, where the crowd was dense, and helicopters flew over the city centre as sirens were sounding.
