Skardu by-election set for Saturday amid tight contest

GILGIT: A closely fought contest is expected in GBA-09 (Skardu-III) as voters head to the polls on Saturday. The seat fell vacant after the Supreme Appellate Court disqualified PPP’s Fida Muhammad Nashad, who had won the June election. His son Akhtar Abbas is contesting on the PPP ticket, while PML-N’s Mohammad Ajmal and independent candidate Mohammad Saleem are among the contenders. Famed climber Nirmal Purja, nine others, die in avalanche in Skardu

Celebrated Nepali climber Nirmal Purja, who set a record for the fastest ascent of the world's 14 highest mountains, died in an avalanche during an expedition in Pakistan, his company said on Saturday. "Today it is with profound sadness and immense heartbreak that we confirm that Nirmal 'Nimsdai' Purja tragically lost his life following the avalanche on Broad Peak,” his expedition organising company Elite Exped said in an Instagram post. “We have also received confirmation that other members of the expedition sadly did not survive,” it added, without giving details. Skardu airport to operate flights from December 2

The Civil Aviation Authority announced on Wednesday that the Skardu airport had been upgraded and promoted to international status and would begin operations from this Thursday (Dec 2). The agency explained that the airport's preliminary operations would be executed under the Visual Flight Rules (VFR) only. Federal Minister for Aviation Ghulam Sarwar Khan had proclaimed the decision to raise Skardu airport to international standards in early 2020. Read More…

PIA executes biggest northern area operation

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) operated six flights to Skardu to boost tourism and it is one of its biggest operations for northern areas. Two flights from Karachi, four flights from Faisalabad, Sialkot, and Lahore, and a safari flight were operated. Besides this operation, two more flights from Islamabad to Gilgit Baltistan were also operated. CAA declared it a special operation for the promotion of tourism in Pakistan. Read More…
