UN rights office for Palestine calls out Israeli army over attacks on Gaza police

The UN Human Rights Office in the occupied Palestinian territory says the latest killings of Palestinians by Israeli forces in Gaza may be war crimes, highlighting the ongoing attacks on the enclave’s police. “These incidents are a stark reminder that, despite occasional drops in the number of reported attacks, civilians throughout Gaza remain exposed to persistent, unpredictable, lethal harm,” it said. Palestinian rights group says Israeli attacks aim to destroy ‘essentials of life’ in Gaza

The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) has said continued Israeli attacks in Gaza targeting homes, displacement tents, shelters, civilian gatherings, and civilian vehicles are “widespread and systematic”.“These attacks form part of a comprehensive policy aimed at destroying the essentials of life in the Gaza Strip through mass killings, widespread destruction, starvation, and forced displacement as part of the ongoing genocide against more than two million Palestinians,” the centre said in a statement. Deliberate attacks on civilian infrastructure could be war crimes: HRW

Human Rights Watch has warned US and Iranian leaders that deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure violates the laws of war. “US and Iranian leaders are threatening deliberate attacks on civilian infrastructure,” Balkees Jarrah, the Middle East and North Africa director at Human Rights Watch, said in a statement. These threats come after “earlier fighting between the two countries in which their forces unlawfully attacked civilians and civilian objects in Iran, Gulf countries, and Israel,” Jarrah added. UN assembly approves four-year extension in mandate of rights chief

The United Nations ⁠General ⁠Assembly voted overwhelmingly in favour of extending the term of UN Human Rights chief ⁠Volker Turk for four more years in spite of opposition from Russia, Israel ‌and the United States. Of the 193-member UN General Assembly, 144 voted in favour, 10 against, and there were 13 abstentions in the vote on Friday. Earlier, a large majority of the chamber voted against a Russian counter-proposal to ⁠extend Turk’s term by just ⁠over two months, to the end of 2026. Read More…

EU sanctions Iranian judges, leading cyber group figure 

The European Union sanctioned five Iranian judges over alleged human rights violations, as well as a leading figure in a cyber group. The EU Council said it had sanctioned Nima Salehi, the Iranian founder of the Ashiyane cyber group, which it said cooperates closely with the EU-listed Cyber Police (Fata) and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Australia imposes new sanctions on Iranian individuals, entities  

Australia announced new financial sanctions and travel bans on several Iranian individuals and entities, accusing them of involvement in human rights violations and activities. Foreign Minister Penny Wong said in a statement that the measures target seven individuals and four entities connected to Iran’s security and financial networks. According to the Australian government, some of those sanctioned were involved in enforcing Iran’s mandatory hijab policies, monitoring activists and political opponents, and detaining foreign nationals. UN concerned over Israeli damage to Jesus statue in Lebanon, urges accountability

The UN human rights office expressed concern over a recent incident in which a member of the Israeli military damaged a statue of Jesus in southern Lebanon. Spokesperson Thameen Al-Kheetan told Anadolu in a written statement that the office is aware of the incident and Israel's announcement of the matter is being addressed. Israel’s attack on residential buildings ‘raise concern under humanitarian law’: UN

Speaking to reporters in Geneva, UN human rights office spokesperson Thameen al-Kheetan said “Israeli air ‌strikes have destroyed entire residential buildings in dense urban environments with multiple members of the same family, including women and children often killed together”. “Such attacks raise ‌concerns under international humanitarian law,” said the official. UAE tells UN Human Rights Council control of Gaza must remain in Palestinian hands

The UAE said on Wednesday that the governance of Gaza must remain under the control of the Palestinian people, as it reaffirmed its commitment to a two-state solution to the Palestinian–Israeli conflict.
