Pakistan’s Permanent Delegate to Unesco, Ambassador Mumtaz Zahra Baloch on Thursday highlighted the country’s rich civilisational heritage and underscored the importance of intercultural dialogue, mutual respect and peaceful cooperation while addressing a seminar on the “Traditions of the Silk Road and Intercultural Dialogue” at Unesco headquarters. Unesco deputy chief hails reopening of Mosul’s Al Nuri Mosque

Speaking from Mosul after the reopening of its historic sites on Monday, Unesco’s Qu Xing told The National that after six years of reconstruction, “valuable lessons for heritage-led recovery can certainly be replicated” in war-torn areas. Unesco's project, called Revive the Spirit of Mosul, included the rebuilding of Al Nuri mosque, its leaning Al Hadba minaret, which featured on Iraq's 10,000 dinar note, and two historic churches, Al Tahera and Al Saa’a. US withdrawal from UNESCO not behaviour of ‘responsible country’: China

China said it regretted on Wednesday the United States’ decision to withdraw from the UN cultural and education agency UNESCO. “This is not the action that a responsible major country should take,” foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said. “China has always firmly supported the work of UNESCO,” he added. The United States said on Tuesday it would quit UNESCO, best known for establishing world heritage sites, claiming it was biased against Israel and promoted “divisive” causes. Read More…

Unesco calls for halt to strikes on Gaza schools

The UN Culture Agency (Unesco) said that it was “gravely concerned” about the effect of the war in Gaza on its schools and education sector. It said launching strikes on schools or using them for military purposes are breaches of international law. “Today, more than 625,000 pupils and more than 22,500 teachers in the area are in an extremely vulnerable situation,” Unesco said in a statement. War causes $2.6bn of damage to cultural heritage: UNESCO

A United Nations agency stated that the Russian invasion of Ukraine so far caused about $2.6bn in damage to the country’s heritage and cultural sites. About 250 monuments had either been damaged or destroyed, mainly in the east of the country, UNESCO said. UNESCO Director General Audrey Azoulay said that $6.9bn was needed to repair the damage and get these industries back on their feet. Read More…

Pakistan, UNESCO to establish joint excellence centre

Islamabad: Pakistan and UNESCO have agreed to work out for establishment of PAK-UNESCO Joint Centre of Excellence in Teachers Training and STEAM Learning at Islamabad. According to details, the decision was taken during a bilateral meeting between Education Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain and Ms Stefania Giannini, Assistant Director General for Education UNESCO held at Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
