SC reserves verdict on civilian trials in military courts

The Supreme Court (SC) on Monday reserved its judgment on appeals challenging the military trials of civilians. On Oct 23, 2023 ruling, the Supreme Court (SC) declared that trying civilians in military courts for their alleged role in attacks on army installations during the riots that followed PTI founder Imran Khan’s arrest were ultra vires the Constitution. Military courts get SC nod to announce verdicts in 85 civilian trials

The Supreme Court’s (SC) Constitutional Bench on Friday conditionally allowed military courts to announce verdicts against 85 accused individuals. According to details, the Constitutional Bench headed by Justice Aminuddin Khan ruled that the decisions of the military courts will be subject to the outcome of pending cases in the apex court. The short order also read that those accused who are eligible for leniency should be released. “Those who cannot be acquitted should be transferred to jails to serve their sentences,” the Constitutional Bench ordered. SC constitutional bench refuses to halt appeals against military court trials

Supreme Court (SC) has rejected a plea by former CJP Justice (retired) Jawad S. Khawaja to halt appeals against trials of civilians in military courts. PTI founder’s plea seeking suspension of jail trials rejected

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday dismissed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan’s petition seeking the suspension of jail trial in the corruption references pertaining to Toshakhana gift and £190 million embezzlement. A division bench of the IHC including Chief Justice Aamir Farooq and Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri announced the verdict, reserved on January 24. “Detailed reasons will be issued in a written order,” the two-member bench said.
