Baby in Gaza paralysed after contracting polio: UN

A 10-month-old baby in Gaza is paralysed after contracting polio, the UN said. The child was the first to contract polio in occupied Palestine for 25 years. Sewage samples containing poliovirus were detected in the enclave last month. There are two other suspected cases. WHO 'extremely worried' at prospect of polio, other outbreaks in Gaza

A senior World Health Organisation official on Tuesday said he was "extremely worried" by the possibility of disease outbreaks after poliovirus was reported in sewage, warning that communicable diseases could cause more deaths than injuries. Ayadil Saparbekov, the WHO’s head of health emergencies in the occupied Palestinian territories, said that "We have not yet collected human samples," so it is unclear if anyone has been infected with the virus. "Derna's water supplies are contaminated with bacteria": Libya

Libya’s eastern authorities warned that they had detected bacterial contamination in all groundwater and seawater sources in Derna amid the destruction of sewage systems. The contamination occurred following the devastating September 10 floods. "Our teams continue to inspect the water sources in the affected cities by conducting comprehensive analyses of the water samples, including those from the pipeline that draws seawater to the desalination plant connecting to the Derna port basin area," authorities said.
