Portugal formally recognises Palestinian state

Portugal officially recognised the State of Palestine, the country’s foreign minister announced in New York on Sunday. Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel made the declaration at Portugal’s Permanent Mission in New York, the broadcaster RTP reported. Saudi Arabia praises Portugal’s plan to recognize Palestinian state

Saudi Arabia has welcomed Portugal’s announcement that it is moving towards recognising a Palestinian state in September. Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro said on Thursday that his centre-right government would begin consultations with the main political parties and conservative President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa about the potential recognition of a Palestinian state. “The kingdom affirms that this positive step supports the path toward the implementation of the two-state solution and achieving peace,” the Saudi Foreign Ministry said. GCC welcomes Canada, Malta and Portugal's moves to recognize Palestine

The Gulf Co-operation Council has welcomed the announcements by Canada, Malta and Portugal of their plans to recognise Palestine. Prime Ministers Mark Carney of Canada, Robert Abela of Malta and Luis Montenegro of Portugal said their countries intennded to recognise Palestinian statehood in September. “This step reflects the growing international support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people – foremost among them, their right to establish an independent state,” said GCC Secretary General Jassem Al Budaiwi. Power outage hits large parts of Spain and Portugal

Spain and Portugal were hit by a widespread power outage on Monday that paralysed public transport, caused large traffic jams and delayed flights. Utility operators sought to restore the grid but Spanish electricity transmission operator Red Eléctrica said the outage, the cause of which was not immediately known, could last from six to 10 hours. Pakistani student killed in Portugal

A young Pakistani student, who hailed from Lahore, was gunned down when he resisted a robbery attempt in Portugal. In a statement, the family members of the victim, identified as Anthony Shaukat, said he had gone to Portugal for a cancer research project. The family members said that Anthony had done his masters from Sweden and PhD from Germany. Two people killed in attack at Islamic centre in Portugal

At least two people were killed and one wounded in a knife attack at the Ismaili Centre in Lisbon on Tuesday, Portuguese police and a Muslim community leader said. Officers shot the attacker after he refused to lay down his weapon and approached them with a large knife. He was arrested and taken to hospital.
