Deadly attack during prayers shakes central Nigeria

JOS, Nigeria: Jihadists kidnapped and killed scores of people during Friday prayers in Nigeria’s Niger state, survivors and lawmakers told AFP. The attack occurred in Dikera village near the Benin border, where armed groups and Sahel militants have increased activity. Survivor Jibril Ahmad said fighters from Lakurawa attacked worshippers with guns, knives and machetes, accusing them of not following Islam. Nearby Binzi village was also targeted. Nigeria warns citizens against scams after citizens tricked into fighting for Russia

Nigeria has warned its nationals against scams aimed at duping them into fighting abroad after reports that dozens have ended up fighting in the Russian army. The Nigerian Foreign Ministry, in a statement, expressed “grave concern over the rising and alarming cases of Nigerian citizens being illegally recruited to participate in foreign armed conflicts”. “Several Nigerians who have fallen victim to such unfortunate situations were deployed to combat zones after being misled and coerced into signing military service contracts,” it said. Nigerian Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar has talked to Al Jazeera, reiterating that the US attack was coordinated with the Nigerian government and saying it “clearly” showed that his government would work with other countries in the “fight against terrorism”.
