Zelenskyy pushes for NATO membership at Moldova meeting

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy pressed his case for Ukraine to be part of the Nato military alliance as he joined European leaders in Moldova. Türkiye Parliament ratifies Finland's NATO membership

Türkiye has become the final NATO nation to ratify Finland's membership of the defence alliance in the wake of Russia's offensive in Ukraine. Lawmakers on Thursday unanimously backed the Nordic country's accession. Türkiye to start process for Finland's NATO membership

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, right, and Finnish President Sauli Niinisto held a joint news conference at Presidential Complex in Ankara, Türkiye. Finland lauds Turkish ratification for NATO membership

Finnish President Sauli Niinistö welcomed Turkey’s decision to begin the ratification process of Finland’s application to NATO. It also said that its membership was “not complete” without Sweden. “It is very good to hear this news,” Niinistö told reporters. “But we have a neighbor, Sweden....... Türkiye cancels NATO talks with Sweden, Finland: Report

Türkiye indefinitely postponed a new round of talks with Sweden and Finland on the Nordic neighbours’ NATO membership bids. The meeting was due to take place in Brussels in February, state broadcaster TRT reported, citing Turkish diplomatic sources. Slovakia approves NATO membership for Finland, Sweden

On Sept 27, Slovakia's parliament ratified the entry of Finland and Sweden to NATO, becoming one of the last countries to back the military alliance's expansion. Finland and Sweden sought to join NATO this year in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Portugal backs NATO membership for Finland, Sweden

Lisbon: On September 16, Portugal's parliament ratified the entry of Finland and Sweden to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The 230-seat Portuguese parliament approved the entry of the two Nordic countries into NATO by a 219-11 vote, with only the Communists and Left Bloc voting against them. "By approving Finland and Sweden joining NATO, parliament reinforces its commitment to peace in Europe, the collective security of the Euro-Atlantic area, but also to human rights and democracy," Marcos Perestrello, a lawmaker from the ruling Socialist Party, said during the debate. Finland, Sweden to continue NATO talks with Turkey

Helsinki: On June 1, Finland and Sweden said that they would continue a dialogue with Turkey over their requests for NATO membership. On the other hand, both did not say whether there had been progress on overcoming Ankara's objections to their joining the military alliance. "Together with Sweden, we will do our homework and prepare for the questions Turkey has," Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto told reporters, commenting on talks that took place in Ankara last week.
