Aircraft carrying Malawi vice president missing

An aircraft carrying Malawi’s Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima and nine others has gone missing, Malawi’s presidency said on Monday. “All efforts by aviation authorities to make contact with the Aircraft since it went off the radar have failed thus far,” Malawi’s Office of the President and Cabinet said in a statement. London: Extreme weather events in Pakistan and Malawi drew "very sharp" rises in malaria infections and deaths, a global health chief said ahead of World Malaria Day on April 25. Malawi’s president appeals for immediate aid

President Lazarus Chakwera of Malawi appealed to the international community to send urgent help to the southern African nation. Malawi was ravaged by storms that killed more than 300 people and displaced hundreds of thousands more. “We need immediate help,” he told. “We need helicopters now that cleared off somewhat so that we can airlift some foodstuffs and other equipment,” he added. Malawi keeps schools shut as cholera deaths surge

It emerged that Malawi delayed the opening of public schools in Blantyre and Lilongwe because of cholera deaths. Health Minister Khumbize Chiponda said that the total number of cases has surged to 17,824 and the number of deaths to 595 since cases were first reported in March. “Due to the continuing increase of cholera cases and deaths in the cities of Blantyre and Lilongwe, primary and secondary schools in the two cities will not start on 3rd January as earlier advised,” he added.
