Hong Kong protests Panama takeover of key canal ports

Hong Kong is protesting Panama's seizure of two ports on a canal vital for global trade that were operated by a Hong Kong-based company for decades, the city’s government said on Tuesday. Hong Kong's Commerce and Economic Development Bureau said in a statement it had lodged “stern protests” with Panama's consulate, adding that it had expressed strong opposition and dissatisfaction and would “staunchly support the legitimate rights and interests of Hong Kong corporations overseas.” Read More…

Hong Kong court convicts media tycoon Jimmy Lai on two major charges

Hong Kong media tycoon Jimmy Lai was on Monday found guilty on two counts of foreign collusion and of seditious publication, in one of the Chinese city's highest-profile national security trials. The founder of the now-shut Apple Daily newspaper has been behind bars since 2020, with his case widely criticised as an example of eroding political freedoms under the national security law Beijing imposed on Hong Kong following protests in 2019. US issues sanctions on networks, vessels for dealing in Iran oil

The Trump administration issued more Iran-related sanctions, targeting 13 entities based in Hong Kong, China, the United Arab Emirates and the Marshall Islands, as well as eight vessels, the U.S. Treasury Department said. The measures cover Greek national Antonios Margaritis and his network of companies and vessels that Treasury said was involved in transporting Iranian oil exports in violation of sanctions. Treasury also designated Ares Shipping Limited in Hong Kong, Comford Management in the Marshall Islands and Hong Kong Hangshun Shipping Limited in Hong Kong. Read More…

China slams US 'suppression' as trade war deepens

Beijing accused the United States of "suppression" after its postal service said it suspended parcels from China and Hong Kong, a move that could hit e-commerce giants Temu and Shein. Tensions between the US and China have soared in recent days as the world's two largest economies slapped a volley of tariffs on each other's imports, hitting hundreds of billions of dollars in trade. Explosion forces crew to abandon Hong Kong-flagged ship in Red Sea

An explosion struck a Hong Kong-flagged container ship travelling through the Red Sea on Tuesday, sparking a major fire that forced its crew to abandon the vessel, shipping industry officials said. Panama complains to UN over Trump canal threat, starts audit

Panama has complained to the United Nations over US President Donald Trump's "worrying" threat to seize the Panama Canal, even as it launched an audit of the Hong Kong-linked operator of two ports on the interoceanic waterway. In a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, the government in Panama City referred to an article of the UN Charter precluding any member from "the threat or use of force" against the territorial integrity or political independence of another. A powerful typhoon swept south of Hong Kong and was moving toward a Chinese island province where it was expected to make landfall, forcing many aspects of life in the region to a halt. Shipping companies avoiding Red Sea routes warn of delays

Germany's Hapag-Lloyd and Hong Kong's OOCL are the latest shipping companies to announce they will avoid the Red Sea, after attacks by Yemen's Houthi rebels in the region. The attacks have disrupted shipping through the Suez Canal, which handles about 12 per cent of worldwide trade. Cathay Pacific Cancels HK-Tel Aviv Flights for Rest of 2023

Cathay Pacific Airways said it had cancelled all flights between Hong Kong and Tel Aviv for the rest of this year, citing “the ongoing situation in Israel”. Customers with tickets between the cities through March 31, 2024 “can rebook, reroute or refund their travel without the usual fees,” the company said.
