Floods and landslides leave dozens dead in region

Heavy rains triggered floods and landslides across northern India and Nepal, killing at least 68 people over three days, officials said Sunday. Uttar Pradesh reported 56 deaths and more than 1,000 damaged homes, while Nepal recorded 12 fatalities and seven people missing since Thursday. The disasters come weeks after catastrophic flooding in Nepal killed more than 1,400 people. Nullah Lai faces flood risk amid heavy rains in Rawalpindi, Islamabad

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Wednesday issued a flood alert for Rawalpindi's Nullah Lai after three days of continuous rainfall in the twin cities since Monday. The Rawalpindi administration earlier sounded flood-warning sirens as heavy rain intensified, with the water level at Kattarian crossing 22 feet and reaching 16 feet near Gawalmandi Bridge, up from earlier readings of 19 feet and 15 feet, respectively. Sri Lanka declares emergency as cyclone toll hits 132

China says cumulative 44 dead, 9 missing in Beijing rains

China said Thursday that a total of 44 people were killed and nine unaccounted for following heavy rains that soaked swathes of the capital Beijing since last week. “As of midday on July 31, some 44 people have died and nine are still missing as a result of the disasters across the whole of Beijing,” top city official Xia Linmao told a news conference. “Between July 23 and 29, Beijing suffered extreme rainfall,” he said, adding they had caused “significant casualties and (other) losses”.
