'Govt. will investigate ‘suspicious letters’ issue': PM Sharif

Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday said the federal government will investigate the issue of ‘suspicious letters’ received by judges. According to sources, four SC judges including CJP Justice Qazi Faez Isa, eight judges of Islamabad High Court and four judges of Lahore High Court have received ‘threatening letters with suspicious powder’. Chairing a federal cabinet meeting in Islamabad today, he said this matter will be taken up with a sense of responsibility. He emphasized there should be no politics on this matter. Read More…

World Bank advises cut in govt. expenditure

The World Bank has expressed its reservations over Pakistan’s state expenditures of 1,124 billions. According to sources, WB has advised cut in various subsidies to save money adding that 167 billion rupees can be saved from the Tariff Differential Subsidy (TDS). The bank also pointed out that Rs. 20 bln can be saved with complete withdrawal of subsidy on tubewells or cutting it down. Read More…

India denies threatening Twitter with shutdown

India denied claims that it had threatened to shut down Twitter if it did not block accounts critical of PM Narendra Modi’s govt. Former chief executive Jack Dorsey told YouTube chat show ‘Breaking Points’ that authorities had threatened to “shut down Twitter in India” as well as raid the homes of its employees unless his company yielded to their demands. Indian IT minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar responded that Dorsey’s claim was an “outright lie”, while also accusing Twitter of repeated violations of local laws. Read More…

'Govt. promoting development of renewable energy projects': Power Division

Islamabad: The federal government is actively promoting and facilitating the development and deployment of renewable energy projects in Pakistan to meet electricity demands of consumers, Power Division said. It said that a total of 51 renewable energy projects of 2634 megawatt capacity have been completed and are supplying electricity to the national grid. It said in order to facilitate domestic consumers in installation of solar systems, the government has already set in place a financing scheme for renewable energy through the State Bank of Pakistan. U.S. to send $4.5 billion more to Ukraine

On August 8, the U.S. Agency for International Development said that the United States would provide an additional $4.5 billion to Ukraine's govt. The funding will go to the Ukraine govt in tranches, beginning with a $3 billion disbursement in August, USAID, the Agency for International Development said. The U.S. funds are to help the Ukrainian government maintain essential functions, including social and financial assistance for the growing poor population, children with disabilities, and millions of internally displaced persons, as the war drags on. Govt. imposes ban on import of other products

The government has permitted the import of raw materials, intermediate goods (items needed to make a final good or finished product), industrial equipment, and foreign grants in aid projects, according to The News. The commerce ministry issued an Office Memorandum (OM) in response to concerns expressed by various organizations and domestic industries regarding the import of raw materials, intermediate goods, and industrial equipment falling under various Pakistan Customs Tariff (PCT) codes listed in the said SRO. Govt. drops petrol bomb, caves in to IMF

The government boosted petroleum product rates by Rs30 per litre, or up to one-fourth of their current pricing, in an unexpected decision on Thursday, paving the way for a staff-level agreement with the International Monetary Fund by June 12. IHC restrains Govt. from unnecessary arrests of PTI workers

The government was prohibited from harassing and arresting Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers and leaders by the high courts in Islamabad and Lahore on Tuesday. The court orders come only hours after police launched a crackdown on the erstwhile ruling party, raiding party leaders' homes and allegedly compelling them to flee. Better to leave Govt. than impose more Inflation: Maryam Nawaz

PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz stated on Thursday that it was better to leave the government than to burden the people with additional inflation, which she claimed had been worsened by the previous Imran Khan-led administration in the previous four years. Maryam said it was easy for Nawaz to "prostrate before the IMF and consent" to the elimination of subsidies, which would lead to another bout of severe inflation, but "he (Nawaz) wants to surrender the task rather than burden people with a further price hike," she said. PTI govt. threatens Bilawal Bhutto of martial law a day before no-confidence vote

Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari claimed on Thursday that the PTI-led government had threatened him with martial law if the PDM did not agree to immediate elections in the country just a day before the no-confidence vote against then-Prime Minister Imran Khan. Bilawal Bhutto stated the threatening message was sent to him by a PTI minister during a National Assembly session today.
