Russia to Respond to Germany’s Cultural Centre Move

Russia will close Goethe-Institut branches in Moscow, St Petersburg and Yekaterinburg following Germany’s decision to shut the Russian House of Science and Culture in Berlin, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Thursday. Speaking in Vladivostok, Lavrov also denied Russian involvement in a drone incident at Leipzig Airport earlier in August. Oil spill from grounded tanker off Oman expands dramatically

An oil spill from the grounded tanker Caroline Bezengi off Oman has expanded to about 150sq km (57.9sq miles), according to Greenpeace Germany and satellite images reviewed by AP. Oil has reached parts of Qabliyah Island, which lies within a protected marine area home to endangered seabirds and the Arabian Sea humpback whale. The tanker, estimated to have carried more than 800,000 barrels of crude, has been stranded since June. Germany, France and UK condemn Iran’s Gulf attacks

Germany preparing to join UK-led Hormuz mission

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said that the country is preparing to join a UK-led mission aimed at securing the Strait of Hormuz, Al Jazeera reported. Speaking to reporters, Wadephul clarified that he does not view the initiative as a Nato operation. He also said the planned US troop reduction had long been expected, referring to Washington’s announcement earlier this month that around 5,000 troops would be withdrawn from the country over the next 6–12 months. Germany to join international minesweeping mission to the Strait of Hormuz once war ends

Germany will soon send a minesweeper to the Mediterranean for a possible mission in the Strait of Hormuz once a peace deal is reached between the US and Iran. A German Defence Ministry spokeswoman told the AFP news agency that the navy’s “Fulda”, a minesweeping vessel, will be deployed “in the coming days”.
