Celebrations among Venezuelan diaspora in Miami-Dade County

There is a huge Venezuelan population here in Florida who support President Donald Trump. I was among the crowds yesterday, and they had their Make America Great Again hats on. They were incredibly happy. There have been some shifts recently because you have to look at the wider political situation down here in Miami-Dade County. It’s typically been a Democratic area, but it went to Trump in the 2024 election. However, there are around 600,000 Venezuelans here under what’s called Temporary Protected Status (TPS), which is something that former US… Read More…

Migrants at US detention centre forced to eat ‘like dogs’: Report

Migrants at a detention centre in Florida were forced to eat “like dogs”, with their hands tied behind their backs, an international watchdog said in a report. Human Rights Watch, which gathered testimony from detainees, relatives and lawyers, documented alleged abuses at three centres in southern Florida and said people were subjected to degrading treatment, lack of medical care and overcrowding. Former detainee Harpinder Chauhan,56, a British entrepreneur and father of two, recounted an incident in April in which dozens of men were denied food for hours. They were allegedly… Read More…

Trump expected to appoint Marco Rubio as US Secretary of State: Reports

US President-elect Donald Trump is expected to name Florida Senator Marco Rubio as his secretary of state, according to a report Monday. Neither Rubio's team nor Trump's team have confirmed the report. Rubio, first elected to the Senate in 2010, is known for his hardline stance on Cuba, Iran and China. Recently, however, he has aligned more closely with Trump’s foreign policy, echoing the president-elect’s calls for an end to Russia’s war in Ukraine, which he said has reached a “stalemate" and "needs to be brought to a conclusion."
