Finland’s President says he is ready to recognize Palestine

Finland's President Alexander Stubb has said he is ready to approve a recognition of a Palestinian state if the government moves forward with such a proposal. "The decisions by France, the United Kingdom and Canada reinforce the trend towards recognizing Palestine as part of efforts to breathe new life into the peace process," Mr Stubb said in a post to X Thursday. Finland, Ukraine sign 10-year security agreement

Finland’s President Alexander Stubb on Wednesday visited Ukraine where he and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy signed an agreement on security cooperation and long-term support between the two countries, Stubb’s office said in a statement. The deal covers a range of topics including political support, backing for Ukraine’s defence and security and support for Ukrainian reforms and reconstruction. Read More…

Finland to resume funding to UNRWA

Finland will resume funding to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, the country's Foreign Trade and Development Minister said on Friday. Several countries, including the US and UK, paused funding to UNRWA after accusations by Israel that a small number of the agency's 13,000 staff in Gaza took part in the October 7 attack on Israel. "UNRWA improving its risk management, meaning preventing and initiating close monitoring for misconduct, provides sufficient guarantees for us at this point to continue our support," Ville Tavio said. Russia warns of a ‘crisis’ at Arctic border with Finland

Russia said on Wednesday that a humanitarian emergency was unfolding at one of its checkpoints on the Artic border with Finland, where it said hundreds of migrants were stranded in freezing temperatures. More than 500 asylum seekers have crossed from Russia to Finland since November, Finnish public broadcaster YLE says, mostly from Somalia, Syria, Yemen and Iraq. Finnish Nobel Peace laureate dies aged 86

Nobel Peace laureate Martti Ahtisaari, who served as Finland's 10th president between 1994 and 2000, died at the age of 86, the Finnish president's office said in a statement. Ahtisaari was celebrated around the world for brokering peace in conflict zones in Kosovo, Indonesia and Northern Ireland. He refused to accept that wars and conflicts were inevitable. Read More…

Finland joined NATO in a historic shift triggered by the war in Ukraine, prompting anger in Russia where officials cast the move as a threat. The Finnish flag was raised at the Brussels headquarters of the world’s largest military alliance on Tuesday afternoon. Sweden lifts ban on Quran burning

A court in Sweden lifted a ban on Quran-burning protests that angered Turkey, on the day Swedish officials had to sit on the sidelines as Finland joined Nato. Judges ruled that fears of violent reprisals against Sweden did not justify a ban. Finland to become 31st NATO member

Finland's flag to be hoisted outside NATO headquarters on Tuesday when it becomes the newest member of the Western alliance, Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said. A senior alliance commander stated that Finland had not asked for NATO members to station troops on its territory. “Whether we will station troops in Finland is a question that starts with Finland,” said Admiral Rob Bauer, the chair of NATO’s military committee. “For now, there is no such request.
