Telecom sector seeks changes to procurement framework

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Access Providers Association has urged the government to end direct government-to-government contracting under public procurement rules, saying it is discouraging investment and innovation in the IT and telecom sectors. In a letter to senior ministers, the association called for state-owned enterprises to compete with private firms for government-funded projects. Petrol pump owners defer nationwide strike after negotiations with govt

The All Pakistan Petrol Pumps Owners Association (APPPOA) on Wednesday postponed its planned nationwide strike after successful negotiations with the federal government, while the Petroleum Dealers Association also endorsed the decision. Petrol pump owners and dealers had earlier announced a 24-hour nationwide shutdown from Thursday in protest against the government's decision to revise petroleum product prices on a daily basis. South Africa rejects US pressure to distance itself from Iran 

South Africa has no reason to cut ties with Iran, its director general of foreign affairs said, after the new US ambassador was quoted as saying the country's association with the Islamic Republic was an impediment to good relations with Washington. In an interview with Reuters over the weekend, Zane Dangor, director-general of the department of international relations, also rejected some other Trump administration demands, such as dropping South Africa's genocide case against Israel, scrapping Black empowerment laws or accepting a refugee programme for whites. Israel is committing genocide in Gaza: Scholars' association

The world's leading genocide scholars' association has passed a resolution saying that the legal criteria have been met to establish Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, its president stated. "Israel’s policies and actions in Gaza constitute war crimes and crimes against humanity as defined in international humanitarian law and the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court," the association said in a statement. Italian football coaches seek suspension of Israel World Cup ties

The Italian Football Coaches’ Association (AIAC) is pushing for Israel to be suspended from international competition over the war on Gaza. Ahead of Italy’s crucial World Cup qualifiers against Israel in the next two months, the AIAC says “Israel must stop. Football must also take action.” The AIAC has written a formal letter to the Italian football federation, to be forwarded to European and world football’s governing bodies, calling for Israel to be suspended. Journalists urge Israel to give access to Gaza

The Foreign Press Association has urged Israel to allow news media "unrestricted" access to Gaza, off-limits to outside journalists operating independently since the war there began in October 2023.
