Houston Moves to Limit Police Cooperation With ICE

Houston Mayor John Whitmire has ordered the city’s police department to restrict cooperation with federal immigration officers, challenging a Republican-backed Texas law. Under the new policy, police cannot notify Immigration and Customs Enforcement solely because someone faces a civil immigration warrant. Contact with ICE will be permitted if the individual is also arrested and charged with an offence carrying jail time. Whitmire said the move aims to reduce fear among residents.
