Iceland delivers setback to EU membership ambitions

REYKJAVIK: Icelanders have rejected plans to resume negotiations on joining the European Union, final referendum results showed Sunday, dealing a setback to Brussels. The vote saw a narrow majority oppose restarting talks suspended more than a decade ago. The non-binding result is expected to put the EU question aside for several years. Iceland, which has fewer than 400,000 people, remains closely linked to the bloc through the European Economic Area and Schengen arrangements.
