French President Emmanuel Macron says he spoke to Syria’s President Ahmed al-Sharaa this morning. In a post on X, Macron said he expressed his “deep concern” about the fighting in northeast Syria between government forces and the SDF, adding a permanent ceasefire is needed along with an agreement to integrate the SDF into the Syrian army. “The unity and stability of Syria depend on it,” said Macron.
