Egypt welcomed the recognition of the state of Palestine by Spain, Ireland and Norway and called on other nations to follow their example “to allow the values of justice and fairness” to prevail. A Foreign Ministry statement said the move by the three European nations would bolster the prospect of establishing an independent Palestinian state and support the legitimate right of the Palestinians in the face of Israeli occupation. Egypt’s relations with Israel have significantly soured since the start of the Israel-Gaza war last October.
