Vatican City: On Dec 26, Pope Francis languished over Italy’s plunging birthrate. He warned that the drop represented a peril to the future of the country. While addressing a weekly congregation, he said, “The demographic winter is a real worry, at least here in Italy”. ISTAT statistics office said that there were 404,892 births in Italy in 2020, down 15,192 from 2019.
