Mike Nesmith, one of the four members of the 1960s television and pop sensation The Monkees, died on Friday, according to Micky Dolenz and his family. He was 78 years old at the time.

The group was formed in the United States to compete with The Beatles in the United Kingdom.

The Monkees were a commercial smash, with catchy pop hits that are instantly recognisable more than 50 years later. They were dubbed “The Pre-Fab Four” — a play on their artifice and The Beatles’ nickname.
