Iran is trying to support its allies and the sovereignty of the Lebanese govt by rejecting the US-backed ceasefire deal between Israel and Lebanon, says Hassan Ahmadian, a professor at the University of Tehran. Ahmadian noted that Iran recently threatened to launch attacks against Israel when the Israeli military threatened to strike Beirut’s southern suburbs. “Now they’re saying that this deal is not a recipe for peace there,” Ahmadian told Al Jazeera, noting that the ceasefire does not specify terms for Israel’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon, the return of displaced Lebanese citizens to the area or its reconstruction.
