Jamal Abdi, the president of the National Iranian American Council, says it has become clear by now what Trump’s view of negotiations is. “It’s one that focuses pretty intensely on the coercive element of it,” he told Al Jazeera. Abdi argued that Trump “is sort of a gambler here who has doubled and tripled down on what really was a bluff – and was not intended to be something that committed the United States to an open-ended war with Iran”.
