The US government shutdown has now entered its 36th day, making it the longest in the country’s history. Hundreds of thousands of federal workers have been sent home or are continuing to work without pay as Congress has failed to pass a spending measure. The impact is spreading nationwide with food assistance for about 42 million Americans now disrupted.
