Israel’s top general says it will be clear “in the coming days” whether Israel and Hamas can strike a deal to end fighting in Gaza. Lt Gen Eyal Zamir said Israel’s army would be instructed to “pause and reposition” if there is a ceasefire deal, but “intensify and expand combat operations as much as possible” if there is not. “We are approaching a very crucial crossroads. In the coming days, we will know whether or not we have an agreement,” he told troops on a field visit to Gaza.
