Israel’s parliament passed a deeply controversial bill to reform the body that makes judicial appointments, in a major victory for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government. Critics say the move is a major attack on the country’s democracy. The bill removes two officials selected by bar association on a nine-member selection panel and replaces them with lawyers chosen directly by politicians, one from the government and the other from the opposition, among other changes.
