Andy Mok of the Beijing-based Center for China and Globalization says the new US tariff policy is “not a positive development” for businesses in China exporting to the US. “But at the same time, it is very clear that both the Chinese government and companies have had years to adapt,” he told Al Jazeera from Tokyo. He brought up the resilience of the Chinese export sector, however, with data on its rise over the years. “[The new tariffs are] unfortunate, but also not surprising in that Trump has been very consistent about his belief in the value of tariffs,” the analyst said.
