Australia was set to restore funding to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, Foreign Minister Penny Wong said. She said that an agreement was being finalized, after which Australia would then resume the $6 million in funding that was suspended in January after accusations by Israel that UNRWA staff participated in the October 7 attacks. “The nature of these allegations warranted an immediate and appropriate response,” Ms Wong said. “The best available current advice from agencies and the Australian government lawyers is that UNRWA is not a terrorist organization and that existing additional safeguards sufficiently protect Australian taxpayer funding.”
