The Israel-Gaza conflict provoked strong emotions that were hindering discussions on how to best find a peaceful solution to the war, the EU’s top diplomat Josep Borrell said on Wednesday. In a speech to the European Parliament, Borrell recognized that the bloc’s 27 member states were divided over the war but warned that “there cannot be a military solution to this conflict”. “One cannot kill an idea,” he said. “It ought to be possible to criticize the policies of Israel without being accused of not liking the Jews. Let’s not jumble things up,” he added.
