The UN’s agency for Palestinian refugees has announced that it is pausing aid deliveries through the main crossing between Israel and Gaza, a major blow to the strip’s humanitarian situation as hunger grows and winter weather hits. UNRWA commissioner general Philippe Lazzarini said the Karam Abu Salem crossing “has not been safe for months” after a spate of heists by armed gangs targeted lorries carrying aid, most severely on November 16 when more than 100 vehicles were looted.
