UN Urges Safer Social Media for Young Users

GENEVA/BRUSSELS: The United Nations on Thursday urged social media companies to adopt child-safe designs after Meta agreed to tighter restrictions on teenage use of Facebook and Instagram in some US states. The agreement followed claims that Meta designed its platforms to attract young users, downplayed risks and unlawfully collected children’s data. The settlement, involving numerous US states and territories, could cost Meta billions of dollars, including a separate deal with Texas.
