Officials said on Wednesday that two ground members of staff at an international cricket stadium in Sri Lanka were murdered in an elephant attack.

The two workers were attacked outside the Suriyawewa Mahinda Rajapaksa international stadium in Hambantota on Tuesday evening as they were on their way home.

A Sri Lanka Cricket official told AFP that their bodies were discovered 500 metres (550 yards) apart, and that while there were no witnesses, a single animal was thought to have attacked both men.

The event was held near a wildlife refuge in a mostly rural area noted for human-elephant conflict as a result of habitat loss.
