According to NASA, the explosion of an underwater volcano near Tonga this month was hundreds of times more powerful than the Hiroshima atomic bomb.
The eruption of the Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha’apai volcano on January 15 released “hundreds of times the equivalent mechanical energy of the Hiroshima nuclear explosion,” according to Jim Garvin, chief scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. The Hiroshima nuclear explosion was one of two atomic bombs dropped on Japan by the United States during World War II.
