The Movement for Quality Government, an Israeli civil society group, demanded an investigation into weapons licences handed over to Israeli civilians by confidants of far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir. The request came after Haaretz newspaper revealed that people close to the minister were given authorization to issue permits for weapons without being qualified to do so. Following the report, Yisrael Avisar, the head of the national security ministry’s firearms division, resigned saying Ben-Gvir’s staff were given the title of “temporary licensing official” after one day of training that usually lasts at least a month.
